The Sport Of Walking

Is walking really a sport?  I mean, there is an Olympic event that is basically really fast walking, so I suppose if you consider all things Olympic to be sports then sure walking is a sport.  But to me no not so much.  Walking is more of an activity.  And a pretty good one actually.  For many people it’s one of the few activities they participate in on a regular basis.  And that’s a good thing, since I’m a firm believer in exercise and physical activity.  I must say though, that I’m not looking forward to the day when I have to slap on some pedometer and go for my daily walk since it’s the only exercise I’m capable of.  Don’t get me wrong, I have no problem with pedometers, it’s just the thought of not being able to exert myself more than just a good walk is a little depressing.

I’m actually one of those workout fanatics that get a little bummed if I’m not doing something physical at least once during the day.  Sometimes it’s sport, sometimes it’s yoga, sometimes it’s playing squash, or sometimes it’s just pushing some iron around.  Either way, I’m addicted to all of it.  You could say I’m a bit of an endorphin junkie.  But, hey it’s good for you.  As long as I’m doing something active, then I know I’m not just lazin’ around and eating junk food.  That would be a double whammy when it comes to this middle age body.  And, if it means someday that all I do is walk a few times around the block, then so be it.
