Diving the Great Barrier Reef
A large attraction for any Australia trip is to dive the Great Barrier Reef. You can find out lots of information about the best diving spots and tours in any Australia travel guide. Diving the Great Barrier Reef is a great adventure, and is the best destination for divers to view underwater life. If you aren’t certified or an experienced diver, you can even learn how to dive on the Great Barrier Reef by taking a diving course.
Cairns is known as the jumping off point for divers of the reef. Diving out of Cairns offers the most options for your trip to the reef and is easily accessible for most travelers as there is an international airport. Port Douglas is another great option for experiencing the Great Barrier Reef. It is located about 60 Kilometers north of Cairns and is one of the best sites to access the reef.
There are tons of diving tours available from Cairns and Port Douglas. The tours range from half a day, up to 8 full days for highly experienced divers. These longer trips allow you to live aboard the yacht and dive up to five times per day. This will give you the chance to experience many different parts of the reef and see lots more different kinds of fish, and even sharks and whales.
If you are not a certified diver, you can either elect to take a beginning diving course or even complete your certification while diving the Great Barrier Reef. Instructors will take you out on dives, teaching you under their direct supervision, while at the same time getting to see the magnificent reef. If you don’t want to dive, but still want to experience all that the reef has to offer, you can also snorkel. Snorkeling is both a cheaper and easier way to experience the Great Barrier Reef without having to worry about certification.
