Choosing Your Rifle Scope Magnification

Hunting and shooting as a hobby is becoming more and more popular. The reasons for this are diverse, but most people enjoy eating the quarry meat, and there isn’t a more natural way than to get it yourself. Another group of people enjoy shooting at long range targets with their rifle just for the precision and the harmony that it requires. Even so for both of these hobbies you will need to choose the correct rifle scope for each given occasion, to get your best results every time.

A high quality series of scopes would come from either Nikon or Bushnell. If you can find the best price on Bushnell Elite 4200 series scopes, you can get something that will last with you for a lifetime, and you basically can’t upgrade to a better one.

Choosing the radius

The radius of the lens counts only for one thing – how much light the scope gathers. The larger the radius the more light there will be in the scope and that means that you can use it in dimmer conditions. Using an over 60mm radius scope in bright daylight can result in migrane headaches. If you want to shoot in bright conditions you should look for under 50mm radius scopes and maximal eye relief.

Choosing the magnification

Depending on the distance to the target you should choose your scope anywhere from 2x to 25x. If you are looking for a scope for a shotgun you should not go with anything more than 3x because the weapon itself loses accuracy after a short distance. If you are shooting at slow moving targets or targets that are really close, then it’s a good way to improve accuracy by using a 2-6x scope.

A pretty standard magnification range is 3-9x which is good for mid range targets in the track, or for animals such as antilopes and similar. If you buy a rifle that comes with a scope, it is most likely of this range.

For really distant targets – shooting the rifle at the track for targets more than 300 yards away, you might even consider to go with a 6-20x or 8-25x scope. This will make it possible to soot at even further objects.

Weapons can be highly dangerous and they can be very effective when they are used correctly and are in the right hands. I highly recommend that all necessary safety precautions are always taken when a weapon is handled, and anyone present should have the proper training.
