I’m trying to stop from hyperventilating after reading this on Geoff Baker’s blog: “Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said moments ago that he has had a conversation with the agent for outfielder Ken Griffey Jr.”

!!!

Said Zduriencik, via Baker: “I have had discussions with Ken Griffey Jr.’s agent, yes. We had a discussion, yes. We talked about Ken Griffey, yes. Is there anything concrete? I’d say it’s more an inquiry than anything else. The conversation was a very cordial conversation that his agent and I had. How does he fit in with the ballclub? I’m not sure, now. Do we have interest in Ken Griffey Jr.? I’m not sure I can answer that.”

As I’ve said, time and again, my first move as Mariners general manager would be to bring Griffey back to Seattle. This would be true even if I were hired as Mariner general manager 28 years from now.

It dawns on me that is why any fan worth the name would be a TERRIBLE general manager. How could you separate your affection for the player from your duty to field a winning team?

I know I couldn’t — and if you aren’t irrational about the players you like (See Lookout Landing, where their tagline is “If You Think Adrian Beltre Is Bad And/Or Overrated, I Hate You And Find You Stupid.”) then why bother being a fan in the first place?

Therefore, I close with this: GRIFFEY GRIFFEY GRIFFEY GRIFFEY GRIFFEY!
