We’d have to bring in a Oregon grad to suss out the bias from this story, so let’s just lay it out.
LEDE FOR COUG FANS: Husky boosters and state legislators berated Wazzu alums who dared to suggest that the state should be more equitable in funding for its two collegiate football facilities.
LEDE FOR HUSKY FANS: Coug boosters are attempting to halt funding for Husky Stadium renovations because they want to keep Husky football down.
The facts, as reported by Jim Brunner of the Seattle Times:
–Wazzu alum Glenn Osterhaut told legislators that funding a $300 million Husky Stadium renovation would give the Dawgs “a huge recruitment and marketing advantage.”
–Major UW booster (and Emerald Downs president) Ron Crockett told the Wazzu dudes during a break: “You guys are fools,” and added that their arguments were “ludicrous” and “insane.”
–Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, told the Cougar boosters: “You ought to be ashamed.”
Well, maybe, but the fact is that Wazzu made renovations to its football stadium without state funding. Asking why the state would give money for UW’s is a fair question, in my view.

I heard the Cougs buried the public funding for their stadium renovation in a request in some other project (like a computer lab or something).
Any truth to that? Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.

This from the Martin Stadium renovation’s FAQ site…
Q: How will the phases be funded?
A: Funding for Phases I and II of the renovation is provided primarily through a facility fee placed on football tickets and a student fee, which was approved with overwhelming support by WSU students in March 2006. Funding for Phases III and IV will be provided through donations and revenue garnered from the lease of suites, loge boxes and suites in the premium seating areas.
