File these quotes away with John McCain’s “The fundamentals of the economy are strong,” George W. Bush’s “Brownie, you’re doin’ a heck of a job,” and Michael Dukakis’ “I sure looked bad-ass in that tank, huh?”
Said Ducks QB Jeremiah Masoli after Oregon’s 44-10 loss to USC: “We feel like we’re the better team.”
This from The Oregonian’s John Hunt, who points out that “yes, [Masoli] was cleared to play after the concussion two weeks ago against Boise State.”
Other comments from Masoli after a game in which USC outgained the Ducks 598-239, gained eight yards per play, and scored the last 41 points of the night:
“Tonight they played better than us, and the score indicated that. But I still feel like we’re the better team, we just gave that one away. We just made some mistakes that we usually don’t. I feel like our football team is better all-around, but they played better tonight, so they got the ‘W’.”
In other self-delusion, Oregon’s Jeremiah Johnson told reporters that the Ducks’ problem was SC’s psychology: “Pretty sure they looked over Oregon State and made sure they didn’t look over us.” Didn’t look over you, no, but they might have looked under you so they could find you.
Perhaps there’s something in that first name. The prophet Jeremiah, was ignored during his lifetime — not because he made no sense like the Ducks’ Jeremiahs, but because of the forceful, negative nature of his writing.
For example: “Circumcise yourselves to the LORD, and take away the foreskins of your heart, ye men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem; lest My fury go forth like fire, and burn that none can quench it, because of the evil of your doings.”
Yowza. It’s from Jeremiah that we get the modern word jeremiad, “a prolonged lamentation or complaint; also: a cautionary or angry harangue.”
Speaking of dire prophecies: Washington, which lost to Oregon by the exact same 44-10 score, and Wazzu, which lost to the Ducks 63-14, have yet to play SC. Has Vegas ever posted a triple-digit line?
And if you really want to shoot yourself, check out this video from ESPN The Magazine, introduced thusly: “One of the great things about going to USC is that, after a game in October, we can have a post-game pool party!” Oh, I so prefer the changing of the leaves [books plane ticket].
