Swin Cash is an intelligent, ambitious person who thinks about her future after her playing days are over and has interests other than her sport of choice.
This outlook didn’t endear Tiki Barber to his coach or Jason Taylor to his, and it apparently doesn’t help Cash with hers. She had a notoriously bad relationship with Bill Laimbeer while she was with the Detroit Shock, and she appears to be on Storm coach Brian Agler’s shit list as well.
Cash has been punished by Agler for missing the Storm’s Olympic break workouts.
Cash is missing said workouts because she’s in New York, serving as a commentator on Olympic women’s basketball for NBC. It’s a good spot for her–after all, she plays with Aussie Lauren Jackson and American Sue Bird, two of the key players on their respective teams.
Of course, Jackson and Bird are missing the workouts, too, but they aren’t going to get a fine because they are in the Olympics. Cash’s excuse of wanting to commentate on the Olympics doesn’t cut it for Agler. His punishment: fines, and removing Cash from the Storm’s starting lineup for the team’s first game back from the break.
The ironic part of all this is that Cash is supposed to be resting her injured back, so she wouldn’t be doing anything active anyway. And what she’s doing is far less likely to get her injured than what Jackson and Bird are doing. But basketball coaches (and football coaches) tend not to have much of a concept of the world beyond sports–if they did, they probably wouldn’t be good coaches.
Agler told Jayda Evans: “There’s no question that for her broadcasting career that this is a good opportunity for her. But we also have a good opportunity here for our team. It was her choice.”
Cash knew about the fine ahead of time, she elected to pay it so she could further her post-basketball interests.
