The rest of the Northwest’s college football programs start practicing today, but the Oregon State Beavers are beginning day #4. Like in Ducks’ camp, the big question for the Beavers is the QB spot, where Lyle Moevao and Sean Canfield are competing for the second year in a row.

Last year Canfield won the job in camp and started the first nine games. But he hurt his shoulder in the USC game–Moevao took over and led the Beavers to a 4-0 record the rest of the way. If you’re a fan of the underdog, you’re rooting for Moevao, who’s a short squat dude. Canfield’s more of your traditional pro-style QB, scouting services had him rated one of the top 25 QBs in the country.

Whoever ends up behind center, they’ll be throwing to some preternaturally talented receivers. James Rodgers, who had a terrific season as a freshman, may have gotten even faster, reports The Oregonian’s Paul Buker. On a fly sweep in practice, Rodgers seemed to find another gear and outraced the Beavers’ D to the end zone.

DE Slade Norris told Buker: “We were watching (that play) on film and even the safeties couldn’t catch up to him! Once he starts striding out, he’s gone. … he gets close to the sidelines, there’s a hole about like that (he holds his hands a couple feet apart) and he just squeezes right through it. It’s like, ‘are you kidding me?’”

Rodgers’ fly sweep in 2OT was the winning play in last year’s Civil War–watch how quick Rodgers gets to the end zone after he turns upfield:
