The August issue of Sports Northwest is out on newsstands, and though I’ll be highlighting different articles all month in this space, here are a few of the major stories:
–Governor Chris Gregoire is our Walkoff this month; the former Auburn High point guard talks about her hoops game, and about the Sonics.
–A big football preview which includes Frank Hughes’ story on how Matt Hasselbeck will cope with Jim Zorn’s departure, something I wrote about why this is the most important season in Husky football history, and other fun stuff.
–An interview with Will Leitch, formerly of Deadspin, about how to stay a fan of a team that leaves town (as he did with the Arizona Cardinals). It’s part of a broader “What Now?” section for Sonics fans.
–Cover story: Tim McCanna is Emerald Downs’ top trainer–but he’s never won the Longacres Mile. Why not? Partially because he’s too good.
–Mike Gastineau has a reality check for anyone who thinks the NBA is coming back soon.
–Geoff Baker talks about the extreme pressure of the Mariners’ September. Maybe not for some players, but for guys trying to land a permanent job like R.A. Dickey, these games are critical.
