Over on Deadspin, they’re discussing whether the catcher in the video above intentionally ducked a pitch so it would hit the umpire.. Maybe, maybe not, but I can say that I’ve seen this happen before, and it was definitely unintentional.
I saw Matt Sinatro, the M’s third-string catcher in the early ’90s, duck out of the way of a pitch on an obvious crossup. The ball hit the ump in the chest protector. He (the ump) was not amused. Sinatro later struck out looking. Not a surprise.
